How did that last part happen, you say? Flashback to 2020: after 32 years of marriage, Laurel found herself single living in a mountain town with more bears than people. She realized she felt totally at ease with her girlfriends but a bit out of practice around men. In true Laurel fashion, she decided to shake things up with an audacious experiment: 56 dates with 56 different men at age 56. Each was a one-hour coffee, hike, or Zoom—pandemic rules apply. What started out as an exercise in dating jitters on loop, became a playful practice of self discovery. The whole adventure inspired an art collection, “Swipe: Abstract Adventures in Dating Apps,” which debuted in 2023 at Surface Gallery in Colorado Springs, CO.
